There is no better feeling like ending a long hard day’s work by lying down on bed and crawling under the cool sheets of a soft bed, closing one’s eyes, away from the harsh and stressful scenes of reality. For many people, the only time that they can be peaceful with themselves and be truly alone is during the blissful time of sleep.

There could be a number of things that might interfere with one’s sleep. Stress due to financial or relationship problems, sickness, and even other unknown causes could make a person suffer from sleeplessness. For people who suffer from sleeplessness or even insomnia, the immediate source of relief is often sought in sleeping aids. Still, these people remain sceptical about using such medications due to known side effects. For them, the only thing that matters is to have normal healthy sleep, and get up in the morning feeling good and refreshed, ready for another day of work – hopefully, without the need to use any chemicals or medicines the night before.

So what are the alternatives to traditional sleep aid drugs?

One such alternative is trying an all-natural option called Chamomile Tea. This kind of tea is recognized as one of the best all natural sleeping aid beverages in the market. The typical day at work comes with a huge serving of stress. Millions of busy career men and women try to endure the day with a huge cup of coffee. The caffeine is supposed to keep them awake, alert, and ready for the challenges of the workplace. But after office hours, they can try to unwind by sipping the natural sleeping aid that can be found in a serving of chamomile tea. This tea is the ideal counterpoise for settling down the nerves before you go to sleep. Especially, Chamomile tea is proven to work as a mild depressant, therefore calms you down to a steady level before going to bed. Adding to the depressant impacts on your nervous system, this natural sleeping aid can help for those who are having a bad experience with caffeine which can devastate on one’s digestive system, leading to stomach disorders at night. Chamomile tea cause positive effects on stomach and nerves.

There is a little disagreement within the science community whether the herb provides what has long been attributed to it. Either way, while they are all out to know more on the exact effects and properties, it woudn’t harm to give chamomile a try. There are maybe few if any cases of adverse effects about this natural sleeping aid, so having a warm cup of chamomile and finding time to relax would help.

The best timing for a cup of chamomile would usually be 30-60 minutes before one intends getting in bed. Try avoiding distractions and stimuli. Turn off the TV, minimize interactions with other family members, and avoid distractive business or doing something not helpful to sleep. If the tips above don’t help you much you may try some branded natural sleep aids, clinically proven to get you asleep without the risk of addiction.

The ferber sleep method can be an effective method of teeching your child to self soothe, aiding a better nights sleep for everyone. It can however be tough on the parents whilst putting the technique in to practice, it is worth trying this method as it does work.

When you have finished your bedtime routine put your baby to bed whilst still asleep, when you go in to check your baby do not pick them up, instead gently reassure them. Do this for no more than three minutes before leaving the room.

On the first night when your baby begins to cry leave them for 5 minutes before going to there room to comfort them, then leave them ten minutes then 15 minutes, continue at 15 minute intervals until your baby has fallen asleep.

On the second night leave your baby for 10 minutes, then 15 minutes then 20 minutes and continue at 20 minute intervals until your baby has fallen asleep.

On the third night leave your baby for 15 minutes then 20 minutes then 25 minutes and continue at 25 minute intervals until baby falls asleep.

It is usual for most baby’s to respond after 3 days to 1 week if after this time your are still having problems then speak to a health professional.

A cot for your new baby can be a big purchase, but with so many different styles and designs it can be hard to choose the right one for your baby. Here are a few tips on what to look for:-

1. The ability to lift the mattress higher and lower. Having the mattress set higher for newborn babies can make taking lifting your baby in and out of the cot a whole lot easier on your back. But remember when your baby starts to sit up you will need to lower the mattress.

2. A dropside mechanisum. Look for a cot which is easy to operate with one hand. Some models have the added convenience of a drop side that slides completely out of the way, i.e. right under the cot. This allows you to position your baby’s bed up against the edge of your bed.

3. Lockable swivel casters. These can make moving the cot around much easier, but remember to lock the casters when your baby is in the cot.

4. Teething rails. A teething rail can come in really handy for your child when they are a bit older. They can have something to chew on without causing any damage to the cot.

5. Ensure that the mattress you choose for your cot fits with no gaps around the edge.

6. The cot bars. Ensure the bars of the cot are no wider than 45-65 mm apart. If a soda can can pass through the bars then they are too far apart.

Having your baby in the correct sleeping position is most important. Studies show that having your baby sleeping in the correct position can reduce the risk of cot death. So just what is the correct baby sleeping position

1. Provide the right bedding. Use a firm baby mattress free of any toys that could cause a blockage of your baby’s airways. Do not use a pillow and do not use a duvet for baby’s under one. If you are using a crib bumper ensure that it is tied securely.

2.Place your baby on there back, not there stomach, with there feet to the bottom of the cot.

3.Ensure that baby’s blankets are pulled no higher than baby’s shoulders and tucked in firmly.

You know that too much caffeine can leave you wide awake, unable to sleep. The caffeine from your cups of coffee or cans of pop can show up in your breast milk, thereby effecting your babies sleep patterns. A large cup of coffee is all it takes to effect the sleep of a new born baby. Caffeine can accunulate in a baby’s body much quicker than ours and it also stays in your baby’s body for much longer. So my advice is, cut down on your caffeine and see if this makes any difference to your baby’s sleeping habits.

As you observe your little one, you will start to recognize there signs that they are beginning to get tired, including yawning, stops playing, gets a dazed look and wants to nurse – even if they ate not that long ago. When you start seeing these signs, it is time to start the bedtime or nap routine.

There are a few things that are usually good to include in a bedtime routine. A bath followed by getting into pajamas will soon become a signal that it is time to settle down. Follow bath time with some time in a rocking chair if you have one or just gently rock them in your arms and hopefully the baby will start to drift off soon.

By singing lullabies or reading a favourite bedtime story, your baby falls asleep knowing that you are still close by. This helps them feel safe and secureand able to fall asleep much quicker. As they drift off, it is a good idea to place your baby in to there cot before they actually fall asleep, this way youare teaching your baby to associate there bed with sleep time, so if they should awake during the night there is a greater chance of your baby being able to fall back to sleep by themselves.

There are two schools of thought on where your baby should sleep. Some are firm believes in baby sleeping in their own crib. They use the “cry it out” method to help there baby learn to sleep on their own. Others use a “visit and leave” method, extending the amount of time the parent comes in to check on the child before returning to their own bed. When they come in, they don’t pick the child up, but rather comfort them while they remain in the crib. This
assures the child that mom and dad are near by and they are safe.

On the other hand, some parents prefer the idea of co-sleeping, letting the baby sleep in the parents’ bed (ensuring the bed is baby proofed). This allows the child to be near mom all night. If you co-sleep, the baby might not go to bed until you do, allowing the baby fall asleep as they nurse. Many families prefer this, as it also allows for less missed sleep during the night. Sometimes neither the mother nor baby wake completely for nightly feedings. Some feel that this leads to too much dependence on the mother, but studies have shown it actually helps children to grow up feeling much more confident and closer to their parents.

You have to decide which works best for you and your family and establish a bedtime routine to fit that choice. Once the baby gets used to a routine, and if you find that it works, continue with it each and every night. It may not be easy at first, but the consistency will pay off once everyone is getting a good night’s sleep.

Having a new baby in the family can mean change for the whole household. One of the biggest changes is the sudden lack of sleep. Even if there are other children and you’ve gone through the adjustment before, each child is different. Some babies can sleep through the night from an early age, others make you wonder if you will ever get a full nights sleep again.

One of the best pieces of advice i can give to a new moms is: sleep when the baby sleeps. While this may seem to easy, it really does make a big difference. Many moms see nap times as a time to get all the jobs done around the house . But if you aren’t well rested, you won’t enjoy time with your baby when they are awake and ready to play.

Many babies are born with a “different clock”; they seem to want to be awake at night and asleep through the day. While your baby was still in the womb, baby was rocked to sleep during the day by your movements. Then when you settled down for the night, your baby thought it’s time to become more active. So, once your little one arrives, it will take them some time to adjust to the new routine.

Even though it may be difficult at first, it is important to remind yourself that things will settle into a normal routine eventually. But what is normal for one family isn’t for another. You have to find what works for your family. Start to establish a regular nap and bedtime routine as soon as you come home from the hospital. It will help the transition, and hopefully your baby will start sleeping regularly for you.

If your baby seems to be a night owl, and you want them to go to sleep at an earlier hour, try to adjust the time a little bit each day. It can also be a help to dim the lights as it gets closer to bedtime. This can help your baby adjust and realize it’s time to sleep soon. Turn off the TV and maybe try playing some gentle music. It will help both of you relax. Once the baby is asleep, spend some time pampering yourself before getting some sleep.

Babies get hungry through the night. How you handle these night-time feeds can make a big difference to how much sleep everyone gets. If you are breastfeeding, keeping the baby’s crib in your room, or even co-sleeping, can reduce the amount of time it takes to get back to sleep. If you are bottle feeding, you can ask your partner to take a turn feeding the baby during the night so that you get a little extra sleep.

All babies take time to begin sleeping through the night and it cretainly won’t happen overnight. As long as you are consistent with your routine, everyone will soon find they are sleeping much better. Remind yourself that you aren’t a bad parent if you baby doesn’t begin sleeping well right away. It just takes a little time.

Colic is one of those things every parent hopes they can avoid. But what is colic? Colic is when a baby starts to cry for no reason usually for about three hours at a time. There is no real medical reason, or treatment, for colic. It usually starts when the baby is between two and six weeks old, and lasts until about three months old and can be hard on the whole family.

Nursed babies tend to suffer less from colick, but there are still a few that may develop colic. Some people think the baby is hungry or in pain, but the truth is no one is really sure why it happens. Some experts feel it could even be from an immature nervous system and it just needs time to fully develop.

So what can you done? There are a few things that you may want to try that may help to calm your baby. But first, as difficult as it may be, try not to get stressed. The baby will pick up these feelings and it will just make things worse. Try to take turns with someone else when the baby is colicky. If you are alone with the baby and just feel overwhelmed, put the baby in the crib and go to another room. Even just a few minutes away can help you be better able to calm your baby. Never blame yourself or the baby. It just happens; you as a parent haven’t done anything wrong.

Motion has been shown to offer some relief for some babies. Swings or car rides can sometimes help offer relief. It may just remind the baby of being in the womb. If you have a front-carrier or stroller, go for a walk, even if it is just around your home. Rock together and hum or sing to the baby.

Sometimes certain sounds will help the baby to settle. Some have found that the sound of a fan, washer, dryer or vacuum (white noise) seem to help calm the baby. Putting the baby in a carrier seat on top of the dryer may also help. Just be sure to stay with the baby, so they don’t vibrate off. Parents even combine using the sound of the vacuum with having the baby in a front-carrier.

Giving your baby a massage can be beneficial. Gently moving the legs toward the stomach can also help relive any excess gas that might be adding to the discomfort. The massage can help to relax the baby and they may even fall asleep during it. Sometimes a warm water bottle on the stomach can offer some relief as well – but be careful that it isn’t too hot.

If you notice a pattern to when your baby becomes colicky, try to snuggle before the fussiness starts. Sometimes that added attention might help reduce the intensity of the crying. Holding and loving your new baby is in no way spoiling them.

If none of these ideas help and you feel something is really wrong beyond colic, always give your pediatrician a call. Often just talking to the nurse can give you some peace of mind.

Newborn babies require regular feeds throughout the day and night usually every 4 hours of so, but you can make changes to their nightime feeding routine to help them distinguish daytime feeds from night time feeds. Night feeds should be kept quiet and low key, while day time feeds can be a more sociable and active event. When feeding at night, don’t turn on the lights or talk to your baby, be quick to feed the baby before he/she fully wakes up i.e. when you hear a whimper, go to them straight away and get the feed over with before they fully awaken and then place them back in there bed.
