Bedtime habit

Creating a bedtime routine that you implement every night is a key step in order to help baby to sleep through the night. Including relaxing activities such as a bedtime story, bath time and cuddles will help your baby to realize it is bed time. It is important to bear in mind to try and keep your schedule as low key as possible as this will help your baby calm down for bed. Be sure to follow a trouble free bedtime habit and ensure you stick to that same habit every night and your baby will be sleeping through the night.

Feed your baby

You should encourage your baby to feed as much as they need through out the day, with a final feed before bedtime. The theory being the more they feed through the day the less they feed through the night. If your baby wakes up at night for a feed, you should try and keep it as low key as possible. When feeding your baby, keep the room dark with no distractions and immediately put them back in their cot after the feed.

A baby’s cot needs to be associated with sleep time

The third step to aid baby to sleep through the night is by helping them associate their cot with sleep time. If your baby is showing signs of tiredness be it day or night, put them in their cot before they fall asleep. This will help to teach them that their cot is for sleeping and should they awake during the night will be much more likely to fall asleep by them selves as they will know that their cot is a safe, comfortable environment for them to sleep in.

By following the simple advice above you will help baby to sleep through the night and it wont be long before you will get those peaceful nights sleep that you have been hoping for for so long.

Solving Baby Slep Problems – The Ferber Method
by: Debbie Walker

Nothing can prepare new parents for the mind numbing weariness that comes with lack of sleep. A new baby may be tiny but the havoc they wreak to your sleep is huge. It can take work to establish good sleeping habits. One of the hardest things for your baby is to learn to fall asleep on his own.

I firmly believe that parents need to reclaim their evenings. Babies and young children need to go to bed at a reasonable hour so that you can enjoy some adult time (Even if that just means crashing out on the sofa in front of the TV) What you don’t want is to be running up and downstairs all evening in response to the baby monitor!

Baby is used to falling asleep with a parent. It may be tempting to rock that crying baby to sleep – it may seem quicker but in the long run you are not helping your baby to learn that sleep is something he needs to do alone.

If you establish a bedtime routine which you stick to every night and after several months your baby will still not fall asleep you might like to try the Ferber Method. Dr. Richard Ferber sets out a schedule that will gradually encourage your baby to sleep without you. This will include getting off to sleep in the first place but will have a knock on effect if baby wakes up during the night.

If you decide to try the Ferber Method choose a time when you can afford to loose some sleep. It will take a couple of weeks of hard work but the rewards will be long term and permanent.

Essentially the Ferber method encourages you to gradually wean your baby from falling asleep with a parent. It does involve listening to your baby cry – so steal yourself to this.

The first night you put your baby to bed as usual (a calm bedtime routine is essential) Baby should be sleepy but still awake when you put him down (You want him to fall asleep alone – not in your arms)

Leave the room. When baby starts to cry (as he inevitably will) sit it out for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes return to the bedroom and soothe baby. You must not pick him up or rock him – just a gentle stroke or pat so that he knows you are close by. Leave the room again and this time wait 10 minutes before you return. Again sooth but do not pick up baby. Leave again and this time wait 15 minutes.

Make 15 minutes the maximum wait time for the rest of the night. Return to the bedroom – sooth and leave. During one of the 15 minutes he will fall asleep.

On the second night start with a ten minute wait and work up to 20 minutes.

On the third night start with a 15 minutes and work up to 25

Each night increase the times by 5 minutes.

These time intervals are not cast in stone – make them smaller if you wish but it’s really important that you don’t cave. It can seem heartbreaking to listen to your baby cry. But you are close by, it’s a plan not indifference.

I used the Ferber method with my daughter, when she was a toddler. We had not experienced sleep problems when she was a baby in a crib. The difficulties started when we transferred her to a bed. The night time “pantomime” got more and more elaborate as she extended the time I was in the room with her. She used every trick in the book to get me back into her bedroom and to delay the time when she settled down to sleep.

By the time I came across Dr Ferber’s book I was desperate. It was taking longer and longer every night to get her off to sleep but I wasn’t prepared for how hard it would be to leave my daughter to cry. In fact most times I was sitting on the stairs crying too. My husband encouraged me stick at it and I’m glad that we did. It really did just take a couple of weeks to set up a pattern that lasted all through her childhood. I found that I could spend some enjoyable bedtimes, reading stories etc, confident that when I said “goodnight” she would snuggle down and go to sleep without any fuss

I often hear about the problems of moms regarding the sleeping habit of their babies. There are those that are not interested in nursing during the day but keep on waking up during the night every two hours to nurse. So how do you keep your baby sleeping through the night?

The famous scene of a baby waking up in the middle of the night can be very demanding at the same time stressful for both parents and other members of the family. Most parents don’t even have any helpful idea on how to put their babies back to sleep. Fortunately, there are some ways parents can follow in order to keep their child sleeping through the night.

First, in order to help them have an uninterrupted sleep, try to keep to a routine. This would require waking him up an earlier time every day so he will have to do all the sleeping he needs throughout the night when everyone at home is asleep.

During his daytime sleep, try to put him in a well-lit sleeping area. This would limit his day time sleep which will encourage him to sleep more at night. However, when you are nursing him, make sure to feed him in a quiet and darkened room. If he is not interested in daytime nursing, then this will do the trick. When you feed him during daytime, his nutritional needs will be met at a convenient time unlike during night time.

In case your little one uses a pacifier, why not allow him do the sucking at your breast instead. If you do this regularly during the day, then his waking up in the middle of the night will be reduced. It would also help if you carry your him with a closely attached baby carrier during the early evening hours. This is a great way to make him feel more relaxed and ready for a longer night time sleep.

You can also try to make the evening calm for him in order to avoid overstimulation. Some parents choose to bathe their babies before bed time as they find it more relaxing to them. Others however find it too stimulating, that is why it is wise to bathe them during day time.

If your baby wakes up at night and wants to be nursed, you should do it in a darkened room. Keep your night time feedings quiet and less disruptive while the daytime feedings social. This means when your child is just starting to whimper, try to attend to him immediately and feed him at once. Avoid talking or turning on the light. Try to keep a sleepy atmosphere so he would recognize that it isn’t time for play. If possible, do not change his diaper during sleeping hours. This would help him know that night time is for sleeping.

While you are trying to keep your baby sleeping through the night, it is also important to take care of yourself. If your child is resting, grab the opportunity to rest as well. Another great idea to keep your day more harmonious between the two of you is to develop a sense of attachment. Why don’t you both take a stroll in the park sometimes? Sunshine and fresh air is a great way to somehow relieve the stress and the worries of parenting.

Getting the baby sleeping through the night is definitely something new parents are going to have to face. Still at the end of the day, even without a much needed rest, there is nothing that can compare to the joy of having your little bundle of joy in your arms. If you achieve a loving and caring bond with him, parenting is not going to be a haunting job but a noble “career” which is something to take pride in and to cherish.

Colic is one of those things every parent hopes they can avoid. But what is colic? Colic is when a baby starts to cry for no reason usually for about three hours at a time. There is no real medical reason, or treatment, for colic. It usually starts when the baby is between two and six weeks old, and lasts until about three months old and can be hard on the whole family.

Nursed babies tend to suffer less from colick, but there are still a few that may develop colic. Some people think the baby is hungry or in pain, but the truth is no one is really sure why it happens. Some experts feel it could even be from an immature nervous system and it just needs time to fully develop.

So what can you done? There are a few things that you may want to try that may help to calm your baby. But first, as difficult as it may be, try not to get stressed. The baby will pick up these feelings and it will just make things worse. Try to take turns with someone else when the baby is colicky. If you are alone with the baby and just feel overwhelmed, put the baby in the crib and go to another room. Even just a few minutes away can help you be better able to calm your baby. Never blame yourself or the baby. It just happens; you as a parent haven’t done anything wrong.

Motion has been shown to offer some relief for some babies. Swings or car rides can sometimes help offer relief. It may just remind the baby of being in the womb. If you have a front-carrier or stroller, go for a walk, even if it is just around your home. Rock together and hum or sing to the baby.

Sometimes certain sounds will help the baby to settle. Some have found that the sound of a fan, washer, dryer or vacuum (white noise) seem to help calm the baby. Putting the baby in a carrier seat on top of the dryer may also help. Just be sure to stay with the baby, so they don’t vibrate off. Parents even combine using the sound of the vacuum with having the baby in a front-carrier.

Giving your baby a massage can be beneficial. Gently moving the legs toward the stomach can also help relive any excess gas that might be adding to the discomfort. The massage can help to relax the baby and they may even fall asleep during it. Sometimes a warm water bottle on the stomach can offer some relief as well – but be careful that it isn’t too hot.

If you notice a pattern to when your baby becomes colicky, try to snuggle before the fussiness starts. Sometimes that added attention might help reduce the intensity of the crying. Holding and loving your new baby is in no way spoiling them.

If none of these ideas help and you feel something is really wrong beyond colic, always give your pediatrician a call. Often just talking to the nurse can give you some peace of mind.

Is your baby suddenly breaking from a sound sleep pattern and starting to wake through the night when they were previously sleeping through? If you’ve ruled out other possible causes, teething may be the problem.

The discomfort that teething can cause starts well in advance of the teeth actually appearing. Some babies can start as early as four months. At this age, even if Baby isn’t officially teething, his mouth is getting ready for the teeth that will come through. In preparation for the new teeth, a baby produces more saliva. The saliva can collect in the back of the throat, causing congestion that is hard to relieve. Along with the congestion and salivating, babies who are about to cut there teeth may experience considerable pain, not unlike a toothache or headache in an adult.

Some of the common symptoms of teething are:

drooling
runny nose
fussiness
red cheeks
rash on the chin or near the mouth, usually from the excessive saliva
biting and chewing on toys, clothes, or anything that gets near the mouth
rejecting feeds
need to suck nore
swollen gums that may appear a purplish color
soft stools
diaper rash

Most mothers use homeopathic granules, these come in small sachets that you pour into baby’s mouth and are available from your chemist. Remember to seek advise from a health professional first.
