Baby sleep amount – How much sleep does my baby need?

Newborn to 3 months
Newborns sleep for approx. 16 hours every day, useually split into periods of 2-4 hours, divided equally between day and night.  By about 10 weeks most babys are able to distinguish day from night, so by three months most babies will be able to sleep for a longer stretch at night (about 6 hours).  By the end of the third month, the frequency of daytime naps drops from about four to three .

3-6 months
During this period the amount of sleep needed each day drops to about 14 hours, with most babies able to sleep a 10 hour strech at night  and 4 hours in the day made up of 2-3 naps.

6-12 months
A distinct shift happens in the balance of day and night-time sleep. By 9 months, most babies need just 2 naps (morning and afternoon).  Length of naps and night-time sleep becomes more predictable, being around 11-12 hours at night and 2.5 hours in total during the day. This should give you a chance to plan around their sleep.
